Humor in the Workplace – You’re Kidding Right??

By Anne Walter

It’s 2023 – Happy New Year!

Now let’s talk about an important topic, a “Sense of Humor”…. and who doesn’t love a good laugh?!!  It’s impossible to have a bad day if you are around people who are hilarious or even remotely funny.  Whether it’s a joke or a coworker doing something unintentionally humorous, the atmosphere is lighter and everyone’s attitude changes into a positive, more relaxed mode.

Look at the success of the television show, “Seinfeld”.  Even the most mundane, boring subjects revolving around “nothing” and most of us can still quote episodes, one-liners, and phrases that still make us break out in laughter 20+ years later.  It’s the quality of delivery and those essential personality traits that are key to having a good sense of humor.  In the workplace, it's a similar formula for being a good leader within the hierarchy of a team.  Laughter can be a dynamic component that can motivate individuals, promote involvement, and instill a desire that increases productivity because you value one aspect of their personal happiness.  You care about them.  It’s that mindset that helps to cultivate team loyalty and camaraderie, fostering long term growth…and that’s inspiring.

Hopefully, most of us have the opportunity to have a good laugh at some point in the day and if not, at least the interaction of a smile with someone.  Having a great “sense of humor” is a highly valued characteristic of a great leader and sharing a laugh with colleagues is essential for personal growth....and that’s priceless!
