Servant Leadership

By Matt Godfrey

One concept of leadership that I try to model is servant leadership. It is a concept that the leader is a servant first. The servant leader has priorities in the growth and well-being of the community or organization in which they exist. The servant-leader shares power puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. There are positions that may seem like a bad fit for a servant leadership. The manner of application and ability of adaptation allows for servant leadership to find success in most positions. Genuine buy-in and embracing the concepts happen through the process of giving selflessly.

I have noticed communities and environments where work and life are blended have an organic fostering of servant leadership. The principles of selfless service and leaders knowing how to be led are ingrained and practiced daily. Many of these values I have embraced and been the recipient of. Whichever style of leadership is adapted is often taught or learned. It is the art and science of demonstrating a lot of what you are exposed to and emphasizing community/organizational values.
