Year in Review by Katie Bigelow

2020 will go down in history as an unforgettable year. I don’t know if it’s the spirit of the soldier in me or not, but I am mostly unfazed by the isolation. A year or two in combat has given me perspective. I still find myself whispering a thanks when the toilet flushes or I pick up a fork not made of plastic. Locked in my cozy home with a leash to the city park feels free indeed. My children are happy, all 8 of them. I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

I recognize that many have not fared so well. Sickness, isolation, and commerce interruption have been catastrophic for many people. The only way I can think to respond is to be tremendously grateful for the health of my family, work my heart out at the job that I and my employees still have, and hire as many people as my funds allow. This year our team has expanded by four. Our new employees are amazing and have quickly become treasured members of the Mettle Ops family.

In times of hardship, it is easy to get caught up in the negativity. A member of one of my professional groups suggested recording my wins for the year. It was therapeutic and eye opening. I highly encourage everyone to sit down with pen and paper and write your successes out. Don’t compare with anyone. Just recognize the mountains you’ve climbed in your own life. Here are mine:

  1. Hired an engineer to lead our R&D team and had all of his time covered by contracts.

  2. Signed a services subcontract and hired a mechatronics engineer that is a perfect fit for our company.

  3. Had my 9th baby, and he is awesome.

  4. My oldest son entered high school and just finished with his second college class.

  5. Made the decision to homeschool my 4th grader and let him focus on his passions in engineering and computer science. He is also studying Danish so he can move to Denmark when he becomes a Lego Master.

  6.  AS9100 Stage I audit completed with commendation from the auditor.

  7. Finished core MBA coursework. Only 2 projects left and then graduation.

  8. Finished 5 quilts.

  9. Vacations: Bahamas and camping with the kids. Myrtle Beach with Mark and the baby.

  10. Added health/vision/dental insurance to our benefits plan.
